things to do, eat, and know

14th Street in northern Columbia Heights has lots of small local spots offering up delicious tacos. This self-guided taco crawl will get you tasting some new spots and existing favorites.

The tricky part about a taco crawl is not getting too full so you can get maximum taco tastings. Tell the wait staff you don't want chips so that you don't have the temptation in front of you and you focus on what's important: eating as many tacos as humanly possible.

Barrilito Bar & Restaurant

This spot is a neighborhood staple, with friendly staff, a covered patio, and great chorizo tacos.

This is also my dog's favorite taco spot!

Mezcalero Cocina Mexicana

Mexican Restaurant· Petworth
Mezcalero is my favorite overall, partially on vibes. I just really like it. Classic tacos, including huitlacoche.

I don't know if they always do the al pastor on a spit, but I have seen it done on a spit instead of just marinated (if you're like me and want the more authentic preparation). Fairly large covered patio.

Location

Taqueria Habanero

Mexican Restaurant· Petworth
This is a favorite of many of my friends. Always solid. Smaller covered patio.

Location

Tequila & Mezcal

Mexican Restaurant· Columbia Heights
My husband's favorite. Great tacos, and creative cocktails. Uncovered patio.

Chicatana

Mexican Restaurant· Columbia Heights
These have the most creative non-traditional tacos. Really really good, including the vegetarian tacos. They regularly have specials on their creative menu. My favorite spicy marg in DC.
