Walk the wooded stream valley below the formal gardens

Beatrix Farrand designed this as the wild counterpart to the manicured Dumbarton Oaks gardens next door, and the trails follow a stream through a quiet valley with almost no signage or crowds. Entry is free, which catches people off guard given what's on the other side of the fence.
